Emergency Medicine Residency-Greenville

As a part of the continuously growing Prisma Health committed to educating today’s and tomorrow’s healthcare professionals, Emergency Medicine (EM) residents train in the largest hospital system in South Carolina averaging over 400,000 Emergency Department (ED) patient visits/year, including 30,000 pediatric ED visits/year. Residents will focus their educational experiences at Greenville Memorial Hospital (GMH), an 820-bed Level 1 adult trauma center, pediatric trauma center, and regional referral center with a 25% critical care admission rate and over 100,000 ED visits/year. Greenville Memorial Hospital is part of a larger health system, Prisma Health, with 7 acute care hospitals and 5 urgent care centers. Prisma Health is an ideal “community-university” model of resident education to give hands-on patient care experience augmented by the advantages of being an academic health center.

Emergency Medicine was recognized as a full academic department under the Health Sciences Center in 2014 and, following an extensive national search, Scott M. Sasser, MD was named the founding Chair. In 2017, Dr. Sasser was promoted to take on the role as a regional chief medical officer for the health system while still maintaining an active role within the department. Dr. Matt Bitner, who was our founding Vice Chair of Medical Staff Affairs and Quality, has taken the helms as chair, continuing our department’s leadership in transforming regional and national emergency care.  The residency program achieved accreditation in 2016 and welcomed the charter class of residents in July 2017. Our three-year residency program includes 10 residents per year with unparalleled exposure to critical care, pediatrics and community emergency medicine. In addition, residents rotate through multiple medical and surgical subspecialties with dedicated experiences in emergency medical services, ultrasound, toxicology and emergency department administration. Residents are required to perform scholarly activities that promote the specialty and further transform healthcare delivery in the Upstate of South Carolina. Special thanks go to Prisma Health, USC School of Medicine Greenville and the Health Sciences Center leadership for their support of Emergency Medicine at Prisma Health.
