Medical Student Rotations

Emergency Medicine clerkships provide a wide variety of clinical settings with exposure to adult and pediatric populations. Students are introduced to the principles of acute care medicine and will encounter a wide range of patients, presenting complaints and levels of acuity. Active management and participation in patient care are expected in the supervised setting.

Rotation Information

  • Four-week EM Acting Internship for fourth-year students is available to visiting students June through October
  • The month of May is limited to USC School of Medicine Greenville students only.
  • Shifts are nine hours in length and include equitable combinations of weekends, days, evenings and nights.
  • Rotations include experiences at Greenville Memorial, Greer Memorial, and North Greenville as well as in our pediatric emergency department.
  • Final assessment grade based on 70% clinical evaluation, 10% patient presentation and 20% NBME Emergency Medicine shelf exam score.

  • Orientation
  • Didactic classroom learning
  • Bedside teaching
  • Several sessions of procedural skills and simulated patient scenarios in our state-of-the-art Simulation Center

Visiting Student Application

  • Accommodations may be made for visiting students to interview for our Emergency Medicine Residency Program during the rotation.
  • All applications must use the Visiting Student Application Service
    • USMLE Step 1 or Step 2 score (no minimum cut off). COMLEX not accepted as a substitute.
    • Letter of intent addressing interest in Prisma Health EM (up to 300 words). This is not a “personal statement” of why you want to go into EM such that you include with a residency application. It is a letter of intent as to why you want to be here, at Prisma Health-Upstate.
