Internal Medicine Residency-Greenville

The Prisma Health/University of South Carolina Greenville Internal Residency Program, much like the city of Greenville itself, is a hidden gem in the Southeast.  Our residency offers an ideal blend of community-based primary care and academic tertiary care within the same program. Our program functions within Prisma Health-Upstate, formerly the Greenville Health System (GHS), which got its start as a community hospital, but is now one of the south’s top academic medical centers. We are also a teaching site for the University Of South Carolina School Of Medicine Greenville.

The residency program is a cornerstone of the Department of Medicine. Its balance of academics and community-based care has allowed our department to attract general internists and subspecialists from premier programs across the country. We strive to extend this balance to our residency program at all levels.

We provide

A supportive environment with progressive autonomy

  1. A balanced schedule where training and wellness are both valued
  2. A mixture of “bread and butter” internal medicine cases while still caring for the rare “zebras”
  3. A mixture of general medicine and subspecialty medicine along with over 19 electives available for a tailored residency depending on interest of practice
  4. The teaching of a dedicated group of faculty within general internal medicine and all the subspecialties of internal medicine, neurology, dermatology, sports medicine, PM & R and more
  5. A structured learning environment with proven board exam pass success as well as innovative medical student and peer teaching opportunities
  6. The ability to think globally and act locally through numerous advocacy projects
  7. The ability to build a life in Greenville- a Small Town Community feel with Big City Opportunities

This broad-based training approach prepares our residents to choose from a wide array of career options. Our recent graduates are a perfect reflection of our training, and have been successful in general practice, academic practice and subspecialty fellowships. In addition, our balanced curriculum yields well-educated physicians.

Diversity is both a strength and a priority of our program. We have residents from across the United States and beyond. The class size of twelve categorical residents and six transitional interns allows a mixing of backgrounds and ideas, yet is small enough to allow the development of familiarity and close friendships.

Medical Student Perspectives

Although I always thought that I would end up pursuing a residency in Internal Medicine, my decision wasn’t final until after finishing the 3rd year Internal Medicine clerkship. My experience in the clerkship was outstanding, and my interactions and discussions with attendings helped me learn so much. However, I attribute much of my success in the clerkship and my continued interest in Internal Medicine to the residents who I interacted with, day and night.
