A Message from the Program Director

Welcome to the Prisma Health/University of South Carolina Internal Medicine Residency community!  We are excited you are considering our program for your training and hope your exploration of our website will get you as excited about our program as I am.

Our residency has been producing distinguished leaders in Internal Medicine since 1976.   I joined the faculty at GHS, now Prisma Health-UpState, in April of 2010 and could not be prouder of the medical community that I now call home.  Prisma Health focuses on innovation, compassion, and education, all in a state of the art facility. We are a unique Medical Center collaborating with three major universities sharing one common mission, to pave the way for breakthroughs in healthcare.  In 2012, our hospital system opened the doors to one of the newest medical schools in the United States, The University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Greenville. This new, four-year allopathic medical school now provides even more opportunities for our residents to be immersed in a strong, yet supportive academic and clinical environment.

As program director, my primary goal is to help each resident become a highly competent, well-trained, and compassionate physician.  Our faculty, diverse and knowledgeable, shares this goal as well.  We are dedicated to training future physicians regardless of whether they are planning to work in community practice, hospitalist medicine, subspecialty medicine, or academic medicine.  We do this by providing exceptional bedside teaching, an innovative didactic curriculum, opportunities for research, valuable mentorships, and useful skills in life-long learning.  When a resident graduates, he or she has all the tools for a successful career ahead.

The signature of our program, however, is the group of residents themselves.  Here at Prisma Health, you will find a housestaff whose enthusiasm for learning, quality patient care, hard work, and teaching is matched only by their collegiality. Their commitment to patients and to medicine, as well as their support of one another, sets this residency program apart.

To top it off, Greenville, SC is a wonderful place to live and work! Set in the foothills of the mountains and along the Reedy River, this city was recently listed in the New York Times as one of the top places in the world to visit!  With a lively downtown, surrounding lakes and parks, and seemingly endless opportunities for dining, it is no surprise Greenville continues to grow.  If you are considering a career in Internal Medicine, I encourage you to explore our program and our community.

Thank you,
