Meredith Eicken, MD, MPH
Internal Medicine Residency Program Director
Assistant Professor, University of South Carolina School of Medicine – Greenville

Welcome!

It is my honor to share with you the many features that make the Prisma Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine – Greenville Internal Medicine Residency so special.

Our residency has been producing distinguished leaders in Internal Medicine since 1976.  Prisma Health–Upstate is the leading healthcare system in our region, and trusted care provider for our community. Our trainees graduate well-prepared to pursue careers in primary care, hospital medicine, and subspecialty fellowships and are highly sought after.  When you look at the training opportunities, boards passage rate and their accomplishments on paper it is clear how exceptional they are – but it doesn’t convey what is at the heart of our program – the character and culture of our team.  Here at Prisma Health–Upstate, you will find a house staff whose enthusiasm for learning, quality patient care, hard work, and teaching is matched only by their collegiality.  Their commitment to patients and to the practice of medicine, as well as their support of one another both in and out of the hospital, is what sets our residency program apart.

You will get excellent training here.  Prisma Health is the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in South Carolina, and functions as both a safety net hospital and tertiary referral center, providing our residents with broad training opportunities to serve a diverse patient population.  Our research focus is unique in that we collaborate with three major universities (University of South Carolina, Clemson University, and Furman University) to form the Health Sciences Center.  We are working together to pave the way for breakthroughs in healthcare delivery, access and affordability, always keeping the best interests of our patients at the center.  Additionally, in 2012, our hospital system opened the doors to one of the newest medical schools in the United States, The University of South Carolina School of Medicine – Greenville. This innovative four-year allopathic medical school now provides even more opportunities for our residents to be immersed in a strong, supportive academic and clinical teaching environment.  We now offer fellowships in Infectious Disease, Gastroenterology, and Pulmonology/Critical Care as well, with fellows to begin in 2021.

To top it off, Greenville is a wonderful place to both live and work.  Whether you’re interested in accessible outdoor recreation, the arts, excellent restaurants, community engagement, comedy, a walkable downtown, local food, and more you will not be disappointed.

There is no greater privilege than serving as the Internal Medicine Program Director and playing a pivotal role in the training of our residents.  I am proud of our compassionate, hardworking physicians who are developing the critical appraisal abilities, leadership skills, and curiosity needed to provide excellent patient care and drive improvement within their own practices and communities, whether that be at a local or national level, as a generalist or subspecialist.

Thanks for taking the time to learn more about our program from our website!  Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any additional questions you may have.

Wishing you all the best,

Meredith Eicken, MD, MPH
