Chairman’s Message

Peter Tilkemeier, MD, MMM, FACC, FASNC, FAHA
Chair, Department of Medicine

It is my distinct pleasure as the Chair of the Department of Medicine to welcome you to the Prisma Health – Upstate Internal Medicine Residency website. It is truly an honor to have the opportunity to be Chairman of such a comprehensive, vibrant and growing department.

Our educational programs which include the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, outstanding medical residency programs, and newly developed fellowships make this a very special place to take the next step in your medical education career. Many of our residents choose to stay with us following completion of residency or return after fellowship training as a result of the great healthcare and community culture.  We also benefit from our partnerships with the other members of the Academic Medical Center’s Health Sciences Center – Clemson and Furman Universities.  Having personally been involved in all aspects of medical education for my entire career, I believe the opportunities here at Prisma Health – Upstate provide an unprecedented setting in which to be a medical resident.

Opportunities Available

  • A health system that is focused on transforming the way in which we deliver healthcare including emphasis on health management and developing the physician’s skill sets
  • An exceptional tertiary level health system attracting patients with the entire spectrum of disease from the usual to the unexpected responsible for providing care to all
  • A tremendous team-based environment in which to work and learn
  • A great setting to enjoy the work life balance that is part of our program

Our Purpose

Inspire health. Serve with compassion. Be the difference.

Real-life examples of this are easily demonstrated in our residency training program where a tremendous focus is placed on excellence in patient care, innovation in teaching methodologies, and continuously asking how we can do it better through quality improvement or clinical research.  As we accomplish the goals of our purpose, we will reach our shared vision of being truly transformative.

I continue to be exceptionally impressed with the outstanding medical students, residents and faculty that are currently part of the department and of those who will be joining us in the near future. They are a diverse group of physicians and learners at all stages of their careers. Each one is deeply committed to excellence in patient care and medical education. With the addition of the Clemson Nursing and Research facility on the campus and a great collaboration across all of Prisma Health, inter-professional education in the clinical learning environment will be elevated to a new level.

I hope that you will be as amazed with the faculty, residents and medical students as I have been. One of the most attractive aspects of the internal medicine department educational program is the passion of everyone involved to ensure a warm family-type environment in which to work and learn.  This is one of the true differentiating factors of this program

On a personal note, living in Greenville is exceptional. What a great place to live! From the vibrant downtown, the ability to get outdoors and do things, enjoy restaurants and festivals, or just relax in a culturally diverse environment while maintaining a small-town feel is rarely available today.  Given the wonderful weather in Greenville and the surrounding area, it is possible to enjoy a number of activities even in the Covid era.

Welcome to Prisma Health! Explore, become curious and we look forward to meeting you virtually. I’m sure you will want to become part of the team and help us to truly transform healthcare as inspiring, compassionate difference makers!!
