4th Year Residents

Austin Cole, M.D.

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences

I’m an Arkansan, born and raised. Almost my entire family lives in the state, and we have deep roots, from our family history with Razorback athletics to the long-held hunting lands. I grew up in a mid-sized town outside of Little Rock and attended the University of Arkansas for undergrad where I met my amazing wife, Hayley, and we were soon married after my first year of medical school. I completed medical school at the sole M.D program in Arkansas, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. I have a great love for the state, but by that time my wife and I wanted to ‘get out’ and experience somewhere new. I had heard tremendous things about the Greenville Orthopedic program from residents and attendings across the country, which was further confirmed on my interview visit in early January. I can honestly say everything I experienced during the interview and was told about the program is genuinely true. You won’t find a staff as dedicated in preparing you to become a proficient surgeon, compassionate physician, and authentic person as this one. The resources we have at this institution are unparalleled, with the monthly anatomy labs, daily didactics, extensive resident benefits, and partnerships with such organizations as Steadman Hawkins and Clemson Athletics. The training here is very well balanced unlike many residencies, where any graduating PGY-5 would feel comfortable working as a general orthopedic surgeon. One of the greatest aspects of this program is the residents. Every individual has their own unique life story and background, yet all are similar with hard working and authentic character. Everyone is able to maintain a healthy lifestyle outside of work, whether with families or with each other, and believe me, you won’t find a lack of things to do around the city of Greenville and the upstate region. My wife and I have extended our family from our corgi mix, Remi (short for Remington), to our first child while living here. The amount of support we received during the time of pregnancy and after Kenley’s birth is beyond what anyone could expect. Aside from spending time enjoying the city and its many events with the family and fellow residents, I participate in pretty much anything outdoors. My faith is also of great importance to my family where we are involved in a local church. I’m still early in my training, but I feel my interests most lie with the sports medicine specialty. Only time will tell. Without a doubt I believe Prisma Health is the best orthopedic residency program in the country and will always feel honored to have received a spot here.

Ethan Maltz, M.D.

Michigan State University College of Human Medicine

I am originally from the Midwest growing up outside of Chicago, IL and then relocating to Kalamazoo, MI. I attended Michigan State University College of Human Medicine for my medical school training. I really enjoy playing hockey, golfing, cycling, and spending time with friends and my wife Alex. We were initially exposed to Greenville, SC when I rotated her as 4th year medical student. We quickly realized what a great place Greenville is to live and work. It has everything one would want in a large metropolitan city with a small town feel. There are amazing restaurants, bars, and night life without crazy high prices or traffic. We also have a great outdoor life style here with multiple parks, trails, lakes, and golf courses within a 15 minute drive. I have been extremely pleased with my residency training thus far. We get great clinical and operative experience from an early stage and have great faculty to learn from. I am currently undecided on fellowship but would say my interests are between trauma and arthroplasty at this point.

Wes Parker, M.D.

University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville

Born and raised in Philadelphia, my family moved to South Carolina late in high school. I graduated from University of South Carolina were I met my amazing wife. We’ve been married since 2007 and have 4 crazy boys who keep us on our toes. I was previously a residential builder and middle school teacher before finding my way back to medicine. I graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine-Greenville and thankfully had the opportunity to stay for residency. When I am not chasing little ones, I enjoy watching Philly sports and house projects. We love everything about Greenville. We enjoy the downtown which is complete with frequent festivals, farmers market, beautiful parks, The Swamp Rabbit Trail, great restaurants and much more. Our program is very well rounded with great faculty leadership across all specialties, a family environment, and excellent surgical experience. Greenville has it all!

Thanks for taking a look at our program! I am originally from North Carolina, but attended Clemson University for undergrad before pursuing another career in residential construction. Ultimately my wife and I moved back to Greenville after briefly living elsewhere in order for me to pursue medical school. I graduated from USCSOMG in Greenville and was extremely excited to continue my residency training here. My wife Stella and I have been married for 9 years, and we have a 3yo little girl (also named Stella) as well as another baby due October 2020. Greenville is a fantastic place to live regardless of what you are interested in and we are happy to call it home. We like to spend a lot of time outdoors, hunting, fishing, Clemson football games, etc. I was attracted to this program for lots of reasons, but primarily it was the surgical training. I observed the type of operative experience that residents here were getting and how prepared they were when they graduated. There is a healthy balance of early operative experience as well as academic work. The program is full of attendings, resident’s and support staff that are passionate about working hard and taking great care of patients.
