Dr. Courter grew up in Indianapolis and attended college at Indiana University. After residency, he wanted a better year-round climate and discovered Greenville. He published his residency research of “glass FB’s” in the Annals of Emergency Medicine as the solo author in 1990. He then published two other papers in his first five years at Prisma Health. He has had multiple administrative jobs at Prisma Health including Med-Education Coordinator and the ED medical director at both the North Greenville and Hillcrest campuses. He was the last ED recruiting director and recruited over 35 docs to Prisma Health over the last seven years. The thrill of his career has been teaching both first- and second-year medical students at USC School of Medicine Greenville.

His oldest son, Elliott, is an OB/GYN resident at Prisma Health. His youngest son, Matthew, works at Prisma Health as a scribe in the ED and wants to go to PA school in a couple of years. Dr. Courter has been happily married to Jane, his high school sweetheart, for over 30 years. His hobbies include travel, poker and sports.
