Matthew Baird, MD

Associate Program Director

Dr. Baird is an emergency and sports medicine physician who joined the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas and Prisma Health in August of 2011. He attended Dartmouth Medical School and completed his emergency medicine residency at the University of Virginia. He went on to complete his sports medicine fellowship at the University of Arizona where he served as a team physician for the U of A athletics program, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and various high school athletic programs. Prior to moving to the Upstate he practiced as an emergency physician in central Virginia.

Dr. Baird is board certified in emergency medicine with a CAQ in primary care sports medicine. He serves at the Spartanburg branch of the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas primarily, and continues to work regularly in the GHS Emergency Departments. He is the head team physician for Converse College and Chesnee High School. He has specific interests in emergent and acute care of the injured/ill athlete, tennis injuries and performance enhancement, wilderness and international medicine, airway management, and mass event coverage. His current research interests include the effect of decision making on injury prevention and performance in tennis players.

Dr. Baird currently lives in Greenville with his wife, Sara, and children, Caroline and Whitt. Outside of work he enjoys a host of outdoor activities, tennis (and most other competitive sports), travel, and woodworking.
