Peter Tilkemeier, MD

Chairman, Department of Internal Medicine

Dr. Tilkemeier took the position of Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine in June of 2014.  Before coming to GHS, Dr. Tilkemeier  was Vice Director of The Cardiovascular Institute at The Miriam and Newport Hospitals in Rhode Island, as well as Professor of Medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He earned his B.M.S. and M.D. from Northwestern University and his M.M.M. from Carnegie- Mellon University in Pittsburgh. After internal medicine residency at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT, Dr. Tilkemeier completed a clinical cardiology fellowship at Brown University and a research fellowship in medicine (nuclear cardiology) at Harvard University. He joined the faculty at Brown in 1987 and has ascended to the rank of professor.  During his tenure at Brown, Dr. Tilkemeier amassed a national reputation as a clinical leader and accomplished academician. He serves on various editorial boards of prominent medical journals, and has been honored with numerous teaching awards and has co-authored dozens of peer-reviewed publications.
