Psychiatry Residency FAQ’s

Do you have any unfilled positions for the current year?

We currently do not have any unfilled positions.

What are your application requirements/criteria?

  1. USMLE Step 1/COMLEX Level 1, and USMLE Step 2 CK/COMLEX Level 2 CE transcript required. We will not require USMLE Step 2 CS or COMLEX Level 2 PE as a prerequisite for consideration during the 2021-2022 application cycle
  2. Submit a personal statement, including a supplemental paragraph at the end outlining why you feel the Greer Psychiatry Residency would be a good fit for you.
  3. Minimum of two letters of recommendation (ERAS allows you to submit up to four)
  4. Dean’s letter or Dean equivalent letter

What is your application deadline?

The application deadline for applications is December 31 but the chance for an interview diminishes as the deadline approaches. Candidates are advised to complete the application as soon as possible after ERAS opens in September.

What are the required minimum USMLE/COMLEX scores?

We do not have a minimum score requirement. However, scores are considered in application evaluation.

What is the maximum number of attempts accepted for the USMLE/COMLEX examination?

We do not have a requirement for the maximum number of attempts; however, multiple attempts for COMLEX/USMLE Step 1, 2 or 3 decrease the likelihood of being invited for an interview.

Note: The following medical licensure requirement (emphasis added) from the South Carolina Board of Medical

“For the United States Medical Licensing Examination or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination, or the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination, the applicant shall pass all steps within ten years of passing the first taken step. The results of the first three takings of each step examination must be considered by the board. The board may consider the results from a fourth taking of any step; however, the applicant has the burden of presenting special and compelling circumstances why a result from a fourth taking should be considered. These circumstances may include but are not limited to, the applicant’s additional medical education or training, the applicant’s score on the third taking, or other special or compelling circumstances. Under no circumstances may the board consider results received after the fourth taking of any step, except that a subsequent taking may be considered by the board for an applicant who currently holds a certification, recertification, or a certificate of added qualification by a specialty board recognized by the ABMS, AOA, or another organization approved by the board.”

Can I apply if my Step 2 score is not yet available?

Yes, you can apply if your Step 2/Level 2 score is still pending.

Can I apply if my ECFMG certification is still pending?

Yes, you can apply even if your ECFMG certification is still pending; however, you must be fully ECFMG certified by Dec. 1, of the year of your application.

How many letters of recommendation do I need?

We require a Dean’s letter and at least two letters of reference, with at least one of them being from a psychiatrist. Letters of recommendation from US physicians are strongly preferred.
